Enniskillen Townhall Retrofit Project
Enniskillen Townhall is one of Fermanagh Omagh District Councils 2 primary civic buildings.
This retrofit project involved the replacement of 39 windows with energy efficient alternatives. The Grade B+ listed building required specialist contractors to complete the works to the standard outlined by the Historic Environment Division.
Grange Retrofit Project
The Grange building is almost 50 years old and reflects construction methods prevalent at that time including single glazed windows and insulation techniques.
In recent years, The Grange Civic building has been experiencing difficulties in ensuring a comfortable working temperature in various sections of the building. This problem is primarily due to various problems with the windows throughout the building
In identifying an appropriate, long-term solution, officers developed a business case which evidenced the need for the total replacement of the windows and various associated energy improvement works.
Work began in July 2024 and involves the replacement of 112 single glazed windows, with energy efficient triple glazed alternatives, replacement of cavity wall insulation and thermal bridging improvements
Drummee Waste Transfer Station
Drummee is FODC’s 2nd largest electricity consumer. This project involved an LED retrofit and addition of a 45kWp Solar PV array
In construction of the Drummee Waste Transfer Station we also completed sustainability works in terms of reduce reuse and recycle initiatives. Project involved using the precast panels from the former PSNI site at Newtownbutler into the new Waste Transfer Station at Drummee.
These panels would have previously been used as blast walls in the PSNI station and were ideal in forming the new external retaining walls for holding waste. This provided the advantage of clearing an old site in council procession with materials that was no longer required, but then recycling them and putting them into use at the Drummee Waste Transfer Station. This ultimately reduces the carbon footprint generated during construction works whilst also providing a cost saving to council.
Omagh Leisure Centre
Omagh Leisure Complex is FODC’s largest energy consumer. This project began in August 2024, and involves the replacement of around 480 lights, with energy efficient LED alternatives. Funding of £24,000 was secured from the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme to help reduce the capital expenditure.
Community Climate Champions: Taking action For Nature
As a pilot project of the community climate champions programme, the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council Climate Team helped support the Education Authority’s ‘Fermanagh and Omagh Youth Voice’ as they organised and lead on this environmental event in Omagh. The event seen young people from Drumragh Integrated College, Omagh Academy, Loreto Grammar School, and St Johns College come together to explore important climate and biodiversity related topics delivered by FODC Climate Team, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, NI Water, Ulster Wildlife. The event also offered a follow up session with a class from each individual school facilitated by the FODC Climate Team to continue the conversation on taking positive climate action. This allowed the young people to bring current actions being taken and to share ideas for further positive action as a hard copy that can be passed along to school management, school council and/or eco committee. This session included the planting of Native Irish tree whips within the school grounds as a statement of action by the young people
