What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is simply the variety of life on earth, from small micro-organisms to plants, animals and the ecosystems they depend on. It is found all around us in gardens, parks, roadside verges, fields, mountains, rivers and underground in our caves. Biodiversity is important for a wide range of reasons and we all have a role in looking after native plants and animals, protecting ecosystems, and raising awareness of the value of our natural environment. There have been many reports and studies of how biodiversity contributes to our economy, our health and well-being, and the stability of our natural systems.

Celebrating Pollinators and Local Heritage at Lisnamallard House

We are highlighting a fascinating piece of local heritage found within the grounds of Lisnamallard House in Omagh — historic bee boles.

Bee boles are recessed niches built into stone or brick walls, traditionally used to house straw beehives known as skeps. Common across Ireland and the UK from the 16th to 19th centuries, these features provided shelter and protection for bees from harsh weather conditions, helping to keep hives warm and secure.

These remarkable structures offer a tangible reminder of the long-standing relationship between people, pollinators and the landscape, and the vital role bees have played in food production, agriculture and biodiversity over centuries. 🌿

Today, bees continue to play an essential role in sustaining healthy ecosystems by pollinating wildflowers, crops and native plants across our district.

There are simple ways we can all support pollinators:

🌼 Plant pollinator-friendly flowers and native species
🌱 Allow green spaces and wild areas to grow naturally where possible
🐝 Reduce or avoid pesticide use
🌿 Create and protect habitats for wildlife in gardens and community spaces

Small actions can make a meaningful difference in protecting biodiversity and supporting nature for future generations. 💛
