Decarbonisation Targets

Through this strategic framework Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have set a number of very ambitious decarbonisation targets. These include:

Council Assets are Resilient to the Impacts of Climate Change

Our Vision

is to have a net zero estate and fleet by 2036

To Achieve this

4175 tonnes of CO2 must be removed

We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions through proactive carbon reduction programmes such as:

  • Conversion of lighting to LED
  • Replacement of energy inefficient boilers
  • Improving the thermal insulation of buildings
  • Replacement of diesel with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

Climate Emergency

In July 2019, FODC declared a climate emergency, and issued the following statement: “This Council acknowledges the scale of the climate crisis and the impact it will have on people and communities in Northern Ireland, resolves to establish an all-party working group on Climate Change resilience exploring how we can mitigate this crisis and protect our citizens from the existing and future effects of climate breakdown and investigate measures the council can take to limit its impact on Climate Change”.

Strategy

The Climate Change and Sustainable Development Strategy 2020-2030: Restore, Revive, Thrive – Our Environment.

In 2021, Fermanagh Omagh District Council launched its first ever Climate Change and Sustainable Development Strategy 2020 – 2030: Restore, Revive, Thrive – Our Environment.. It sets out :

  • The strategic context behind the strategy
  • The need for both Mitigation and Adaption approaches to the effects of Climate Change
  • The effects which Climate Change has already had on the FODC region
  • The effects which Climate Change has already had on Northern Ireland
  • Outcomes based objectives, which can lead to Sustainable Communities, Council and Environment
  • How these outcomes will be monitored and evaluated​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Action Plan

The Climate Change and Sustainable Development Action Plan 2021 – 2024: Restore, Revive, Thrive – Our Environment.

On 11th November 2021, Fermanagh Omagh District Council launched its first ever Climate Change and Sustainable Development Action Plan 2021 – 2024: Restore, Revive, Thrive – Our Environment, becoming the first Council in Northern Ireland to do so. It relates to the Council’s internal operations which include:

  • Buildings owned and operated by the Council including offices, depots, leisure centres, community centres, and public conveniences (includes heating, electricity and water use within these facilitie.
  • Fleet vehicles owned by the Council,
  • Business travel for work,
  • Employee commuting,
  • Procurement of goods and services.

The scope excludes:

  • Domestic properties,
  • Buildings owned by us that are leased out and operated by third parties,
